Invited to work initially as a visiting lecturer, I joined the School of Nursing at Edge Hill University in 2003 as a member of the Post Registration Team. As the School developed into the Faculty of Health and Social Care, I diversified from delivering the Accident and Emergency Course, the Practitioner in Primary and Emergency Care into mentorship and then into modules on the Acute Pathway for the newly introduced role of the Assistant Practitioner. In 2009 I became Programme Leader (2009) which included working with and liaising with local NHS Trusts, the Higher Education Partnership Group and the Strategic Health Authority to recruit and develop Assistant Practitioner roles supporting them in both theory and practice.
Later I became Programme Lead for the BSc (Hons) Health & Social Care top programme aligned to the Foundation Degree.
An area of special interest has been the development of negotiated learning modules facilitating students to gain knowledge , understanding and skills in bespoke modules enabling them to learn whilst in practice.
Mentorship and supporting learning and learners in practice has always been an area of interest working as a module lead for mentorship through much of my time at Edge Hill until I became the Programme Lead for NMC approved Mentorship programmes. Working across professional boundaries has been rewarding, facilitating ODPS, paramedic, physiotherapists, dieticians and occasionally OTs interprofessional to empower professionals to develop their skills as educators.
Other areas of interests have included working as part of the Practice Development Team including becoming chair on a number of panels accrediting practice areas that meet robust criteria demonstrating their excellence.
I have developed and shared learning materials utilised by the North West Practice Education Group (NWPEG) to support the transition from mentorship to the roles of supervisor, assessor and nominated person in practice whilst working closely with local Trusts to deliver training in readiness for the new standards of proficiency for nurses (NMC, 2018) and Realising professionalism: Standards for education and training (NMC, 2018).
In 2019 I became the programme lead for the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice which is my current role.
External posts have included External Examiner University of York, University of Southampton Solent, Robert Gordon University (Scotland) and University of Worcester.
